"Group Portrait of Paris Firemen": Having lived in Paris since 1985, Serigo would still define himself more as an American artist than as a French artist he says. “Well if I compare France today and the way people compare things here nowadays and how people or creative spirits react in the States to things I would more define myseft as an American painter than as a French one.”

It is when he is in the States that Serigo feels most at home and says that when he is in France he does sometimes feel somewhat opressed by the tradition and the frames which, he feels, French art history is impossing on him. His territory is really quite an anglophone community which Serigo has created. “I have kind of created my own world which is a little bit outside of France and I’m very happy with it because I consider that creation and especially that monumental universal movement towards semething new is coming from the states and the anglo speaking countries.”
